Perlite – especially bulk expanded perlite – is a soil-free growing medium that has long been used to boost aeration in soil mixes. Derived from perlite ore, it’s made by heating and expanding volcanic glass, resulting in an ultra-lightweight, highly porous material. As a top choice for agricultural perlite, it stands out for having one of the best oxygen retention levels among all growing media, thanks to its porous structure.
That said, its light weight can be a drawback in certain hydroponic systems: when water interacts directly with the medium, it may cause the bulk expanded perlite to shift or wash away. For this reason, agricultural perlite is rarely used alone – it’s usually mixed with coco coir, soil, or vermiculite to optimize performance.
